How much more obfuscation and misinformation about Obamacare will Americans be subjected to?

Bloomberg reports that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee discovered that the Obama administration has been misreporting the number of people enrolled in Obamacare by approximately 380,000. The administration was double accounting for consumers who were enrolled in both a medical and dental plan through the federal and state health care marketplaces in order to get the enrollment numbers above 7 million.

The total number of people enrolled in Obamacare as of October 15th has been revised to 6.7 million now that the misreporting has been discovered.

U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, Chairman of the Oversight Committee, believes the over reporting was designed to obscure the large numbers of people that were exiting Obamacare for a variety of reasons such as ineligibility, inability to pay premiums, or the realization that the insurance offered was not worth the premiums charged. The Huffington Post quotes Issa,

“Faced with large numbers of Americans running for an exit from Obamacare, instead of offering the public an accurate accounting, the administration engaged in an effort to obscure and downplay the number of dropouts.”

In May 2014, the Obama administration announced that 8 million people had signed up for Obamacare coverage. That number was ratcheted down to 7.3 million in September in testimony by Medicaid Administrator Margaret Travenner to the House Oversight Committee.  After the hearing, the Committee decided to look into the enrollment numbers.

This latest deceit by the Obama administration highlights the unstable footing upon which the ACA rests and it makes the Kasich administration’s expansion of Medicaid all the more maddening. By implementing Obamacare Medicaid expansion, Governor Kasich has added 400,000 Ohioans to Obamacare as of September. This number grows monthly further solidifying Obamacare in Ohio and helping the Obama administration improve its ACA enrollment numbers.

The Heritage Foundation’s Daily Signal reported that 71% of Obamacare enrollees are on Medicaid expansion which has become a de facto life support system for the ACA.

Governor Kasich can spout all he wants that he is opposed to Obamacare, but actions speak louder than words. The Governor has propped up the ACA through his expansion of Medicaid giving it a lifeline that is does not deserve.
